Delta is Ordering the 787 Dreamliner: A New Widebody Addition
by Krish Patel
Delta Air Lines is expanding its widebody fleet of international jets with the addition of a new fuel efficiency aircraft for the airline, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. On January 13, 2026, the Atlanta-based carrier announced plans to add 30 787-10s to its fleet.
These Dreamliners will sport a premium-heavy configuration that includes a large Delta One Suites cabin up front. Additionally, the Atlanta-based carrier will install more Premium Select seats and Delta Comfort seats, increasing the airline’s premium capacity on long haul routes. Besides more seats to choose from, passengers can expect a variety of inflight amenities such as Delta Sync Wi-Fi and over 1,000 hours of on-demand entertainment via the seatback screen. Of course, guests will be treated to the Dreamliner’s mood lighting, dimmable windows, and air circulation system that’s targeted to reduce jet lag.
According to Delta, the 787s will be used on high-demand routes to South America and Europe. The airline is also planning to use the 787-10 as a replacement jet for its 767s, which are a workhorse on several of the airline’s key transatlantic crossings.
The 787 represents a shift in Delta’s widebody fleet, paving the way for a future with more modern and cost-effective aircraft while attempting to maintain capacity on international routes. With the 767 being phased out and aircraft such as the A350 and 787-10 being welcomed into the Delta fleet, a smoother passenger experience on long routes is slated to be expected. As someone who is a huge fan of Delta One Suites and has flown them on several of the airline’s widebody jets, I can’t wait to see what the 787-10 has to offer its passengers.
