Small, but Pleasant: Delta’s Stunning Sky Club at Newark

by Krish Patel

Delta Airlines is known for having an extensive Sky Club network in the United States, even at airports that aren’t Delta hubs. A perfect example of a Sky Club at a non-Delta hub is their location in Newark Liberty International Airport. The Delta Sky Club in Newark is gorgeous, however, it’s not as large as many of the airline’s other clubs.

Delta Sky Club EWR Location, Hours, and Access

The Newark Sky Club is situated in Terminal A near gate A8. It’s right across from the American Airlines Admirals Club and can be accessed by taking the stairs or elevator.

The lounge is open from 5:00 AM to 7:45 PM Sunday through Friday, but closes earlier at 6:00 PM on Saturdays. In order to access the Sky Club, you’re going to need the Platinum Card from American Express (10 annual visits) or the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex Card (15 annual visits). In addition, Delta Sky Club members or travelers on an international SkyTeam Business Class flight can enter the lounge.

It costs $50 per person to bring guests into the Sky Club if you have the Amex Platinum Card. Cardholders with the Delta SkyMiles Reserve receive four guest passes annually and can bring guests at a rate of $50 per person after using up all the passes.

Delta Sky Club EWR Seating, Layout, and Ambiance

Upon entering the Delta Sky Club, you’re greeted by the front desk station, which features check-in kiosks and desks where the staff will check you in. Found on the wall behind the kiosks is the signature welcome wall with a blue triangular pattern and the Delta logo that’s seen in many Sky Clubs.

To the left of the reception space is the lounge’s main seating area. Delta’s Newark outpost isn’t their signature lounge, so the seating area is much smaller in size when compared to the other Sky Clubs at hubs such as LaGuardia and JFK. It measures at only 7,000 square feet with room for 240 travelers, though the club usually isn’t at maximum capacity.

There is a plethora of plush seating options to choose from, which includes couches, chairs for lounging, and bench-style seats. Built into each of the couches are charging outlets, making it convenient to sit comfortably and get some work done.

The seating area doesn’t follow just one color scheme and it feels inviting with various tones of brown, cream, and blue. I love the carpeted gray and wooden flooring patterns, which add a cozy touch and make you feel like you’re sitting in someone’s living room. Overlooking the terminal are work chairs placed along a rail of barlike tablespace.

Delta offers a collection of locally curated art in the Newark Sky Club inspired by the New Jersey area. You’ll also find other art installations such as beautifully designed geometric partitions that separate the seating areas.

Delta Sky Club EWR Food and Drink

The Newark Sky Club offers a buffet and full service bar with plenty of food and drinks to choose from. You’ll find the bar slightly secluded from the seating area by an open partition.

Non-alcoholic beverages are available complimentary at the bar, however, you’ll have to pay for premium alcoholic drinks. Delta also offers a selection of cocktails in the club, some of which can be made non-alcoholic. Even if you’re not thirsty, the bar is a great space to sit down and relax, with its own mood that sets it apart from the rest of the lounge. The ceiling above the bar is absolutely stunning, with a triangular pattern and sconce lighting that gives off an exclusive feel.

Located in the back of the lounge is the dining area, which features a buffet and dessert cart. All of the food in the Sky Club is locally inspired and made fresh in the lounge’s kitchen each day. During my visit, the lunch and dinner food selection was being offered in the lounge. Some of the items include charcuterie, hummus, cold cuts, and sandwiches. Near the buffet are several restaurant-style seats with table space. I found the seating area in the dining space to be the most crowded part of the lounge.

Adjacent to the buffet is a large drink station that features an Everseys coffee machine, soda dispenser, and flavored water dispenser. The selection of beverages is very extensive and I found it to be nice that there are many flavors of water to choose from as opposed to just one or two.

Delta Sky Club EWR Amenities

EWR isn't Delta's primary focus, so you won’t find any special amenities such as showers or work stations in the lounge.

However, this Sky Club offers spacious individual bathrooms, three of which are handicapped accessible. The bathroom stalls are very spacious and feel modern thanks to the gray marble walls, black countertop, and lighting around the mirrors. By the sink is fragrant Grown Alchemist hand soap and scented hand cream.

Besides modern bathrooms, the Newark outpost offers a magazine rack and printer. There are eight magazines available in the lounge.

Overall Thoughts

Delta’s Sky Club in Newark is incredibly modern and comfortable, with plush furniture and bright finishes that elevate the ambiance of the club. Newark may not be a Delta hub, but this is certainly one of the nicest membership lounges in the airport. It’s not overcrowded, and there’s plenty of open seating. Delta has truly made a huge investment into its new Sky Clubs and continues to do so, with the Newark outpost being no exception.
