An Iconic Hotel with Breathtaking Views: Staying at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como

by Krish Patel

Nestled into the picturesque region of Lake Como is the iconic Grand Tremezzo Hotel, a gorgeous property surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The hotel has truly captured the grand beauty of Lake Como for over 100 years and continues to do so, with lavish amenities and carefully curated touches to make the property feel premium. From the hotel, you’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking views of Bellagio, the surrounding alps, and the peaceful lake that makes you feel like you’re in a movie.

Where is the Grand Hotel Tremezzo Located?

The hotel is located in the town of Tremezzo, which is nestled on the southwestern arm of Lake Como. Many travelers visiting Lake Como fly into Milan and then drive north. Como is about an hour and a half to two and a half hours from Milan depending on traffic.

This Grand Hotel is located across from Bellagio, one of Lake Como’s largest towns. Bellagio offers plenty of shops, restaurants, and scenery, with a ferry from Tremezzo taking about five minutes. Ferries depart Tremezzo every few hours and cost 3 to 5 Euros.

What’s it Like Inside?

Once you pull up to the Grand Hotel, you can take the staircase or elevator to reach the lobby. The elevator entrance is decorated with reflective mirrors and elegant bronze trims.

Inside, the hotel truly feels grand, with stunning Art Nouveau designs, ornate chandeliers, and soft-textured velvet furniture. The lobby is very welcoming and luxurious, and the golden trims and stylish rugs contribute to all of that.

The front desk can be found to the left of the entrance, where you’ll be given an actual room key instead of a key card. When you leave the hotel, you’ll have to give the room key to the front desk and ask for it again once you arrive back.

What are the Amenities at Grand Hotel Tremezzo?

Found across the property are several amenities, including a functional gym, three pools, a spa, and a clay tennis court. The main pool is built on a floating platform in Lake Como across from the hotel and features bean-bag chairs for relaxing. While the main pool isn’t found on the primary grounds of the establishment, it’s only accessible to hotel guests.

The T Spa and an adults-only pool are right adjacent to one another and found inside the hotel itself. Neither the spa nor the nearby pool ever get too crowded, and both offer serene views of the lake.

Visitors can also enjoy access to a clay tennis court and third pool found at the back of the property. Surrounded by lush greenery, bright orange umbrellas, and a wooden deck, the pool area has a distinct atmosphere that feels relaxing.

The on-property gym features all the equipment necessary for a workout, as well as dedicated sections for weights, stretching, and cardio. The location of the gym isn’t great, as it’s a long walk from most of the rooms and even the main pool.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo Room

For my stay, I was booked into the Balbianello Grand Suite, which offers an unreal view of the lake and surrounding landscape. Each of the rooms and suites blend grand historic elements with colorful designs, palettes, and soft textures that appeal to the senses. The suite I was staying in came complete with a single queen-size bedroom, as well as a nicely-appointed bathroom.

The bathroom had glazed brown marble flooring and counter space. It was plenty spacious and included a walk-in shower, water closet, and bath tub that already included various salts and soaps.

What really caught my eye was the living room area. Various shades of light and dark color palettes in addition to the gold-trimmed frames and decorative lamps and pillows felt both cozy and antique. During the day, large transparent floor-to-ceiling windows let in a plentiful amount of natural sunlight that would fill the corner of the living space with brightness.

However, there’s no denying that the best part of the rooftop suite is the jacuzzi-like spa tub, overlooking an endless panoramic view of the surrounding lake. Particularly on a warm afternoon after exploring the nearby villages, relaxing in the hot tub felt ideal.

Food and Drink at Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Guests can choose from five different bars and restaurants during their stay:

  • La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi

  • L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar

  • T Pizza

  • T Bar

  • Da Giacomo al Lago

From michelin-starred dining to a more casual pizza lunch, Grand Hotel Tremezzo offers a great range of meal types. La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi functions as the on-property breakfast site. I felt that the quality of the various pastries and buffet items wasn’t impressive. The á la carte menu was not as extensive as what I was hoping for at a five star hotel, with mostly just egg-based dishes.

For lunch or dinner, L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar and T Pizza are both a must try. Fresh pasta dishes utilizing local ingredients and vegetables will sure not disappoint. You simply can’t beat the lake views from the trattoria, which provide a sense of storybook charm and natural beauty. No matter which venue you pick, either dining establishment offers delicious Italian food.

Booking and Pricing for Grand Hotel Tremezzo

Nightly rates at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo are very expensive, starting from $1,073 and can exceed $2,000, depending on the time of year and room type booked. It’s worth mentioning that booking this hotel using points is extremely difficult, though it’s possible to book through a credit card portal and earn points on your purchase.

Guests have the option of booking through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and Chase’s The Edit using an eligible credit card. Booking through one of these portals can grant you benefits such as early check-in, late check-out, complimentary breakfast for two, and room upgrades when available.

Overall Thoughts

Staying at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a fabulous experience, blending historic charm with fabulous views and classic Italian elegance. The service was friendly throughout the duration of my stay, and the accommodations are also top-notch. Specifically, the floating pool over the lake and gym were both functional and exciting to use. However, staying at this hotel is very expensive, even for just one or two nights. If you’re looking for an exotic stay in Lake Como with breathtaking views, easy access to attractions, and iconic elegance, then staying at this hotel might be worth it.
