American Airlines 8-Route Expansion for Summer of 2027

by Krish Patel

United Airlines recently announced their massive 13-route expansion, which includes 10 new cities. Following the breaking news, American Airlines announced its own new routes for the 2027 summer season. American’s list of new routes is significantly smaller than that of its rival, but still includes three new European destinations. The list also includes European destinations American Airlines already flies to, though they will receive service from additional hubs.

American’s three new European destinations on the route map are Vienna, Austria; Porto, Portugal; and Reykjavik, Iceland. More details are outlined in the chart below:

Cities that American already serves but are listed below include Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Nice. Highlighted at the very bottom of the chart is a fourth daily flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport and London Heathrow. This additional flight is scheduled to see one of the airline’s sleek 787-9P aircraft, which currently flies between JFK and LHR twice a day.

The one transpacific route that’s planned for this expansion has already been covered on our site, and that is American’s nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare and Tokyo Narita. These plans were revealed earlier in the summer, and the ORD-NRT flight will be operated using a Boeing 787-9.

Porto and Vienna are completely new destinations for American Airlines, while the carrier last served Reykjavik in 2019. Note that the service to Iceland is on an A321neo rather than one of the A321XLR models, so there will not be any lie-flat Business Class seats or seatback entertainment screens. It’s highly likely that the upfront cabin is sold as Premium Economy, which is a concept that United applies to secondary transatlantic routes that see its 737 MAX 8.

Interestingly enough, Vienna is the only city on this list that currently doesn’t receive service from a U.S. airline. Vienna serves as the primary hub for United’s Star Alliance partner, Austrian Airlines, though as a OneWorld member, AA will soon be the only North American carrier at VIE. All of United’s service to Austria is handled by Austrian Airlines through their partnership, as the airlines split revenue for the Vienna market.

American’s route expansion which includes three new cities will not make headlines in the way that United’s expansion did. However, the additions to the American Airlines route network are already quite strong since the carrier has been known primarily to have a strong domestic network, but with average international connections. AA is placing immense focus on becoming a premium U.S. airline that can compete with the likes of Delta and United, and the routes to Nice, Reykjavik, Vienna, and Porto will hopefully anchor American’s services to leisure destinations.
